The primary objective is to understand how and at what rate thermal energy moves through matter as a result of a temperature gradient. After defining key physical quantities (temperature, heat, heat rate, and heat flux), the chapter introduces the three fundamental modes of heat transfer: conduction (Fourier’s law), convection (Newton’s law of cooling), and radiation (Stefan-Boltzmann law). Finally, the formulation of an energy balance over a control volume illustrates the principle of conservation of energy, serving as the cornerstone for analyzing more complex thermal systems.
